      Snowboard:
    What we think

Situated in the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Brenta Dolomites, Madonna di Campiglio is lovingly nicknamed ‘The Queen of Snow’ by the Italian VIPs who flock here each winter.

The name Madonna di Campiglio is synonymous with glamour and has been ever since Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Sissi visited this Trentino gem in the glory days of the Habsburg Empire.

But it’s also a true mountain village. From the World Cup Men’s Downhill slalom race on December 22nd, to the huge closing concert on April 20th, this Madonna knows how to have fun.

These days, well-heeled Italians sip sparkling Trento Doc wine at the Ferrari Bar, dine in Michelin Star restaurant Il Gallo Cedrone (there are three M-starred restaurants in the resort) and enjoy après-ski passeggieta –that’s strolling to you and me - through the car-free village centre.

With the peaks of Adamello - Presanella in view, Madonna di Campiglio is linked to Pinzolo by a 16 minute gondola ride. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy a total of 150km of connected slopes by taking the Dolomiti Express to Folgarida Marilleva.

In Madonna, beginners start off on the nursery slopes at Campo Carlo Magno before progressing to blues at Pradalago while the more challenging runs on Spinale and Cinque Laghi are best suited to confident intermediates. Off piste fans will get their powder fix at Groste which has a freeride area that can be explored with a local guide. When the day’s skiing is over, whizz down the 3km toboggan run from Monte Spinale, take a night-time snow shoeing hike beneath the moon and stars or learn about the area’s World War I history.

Don’t miss Chalet Fiat on the mountain for great food and people-watching; DoloMitica, the longest ski run; Schumacher Streif, named after one of Madonna’s favourite guests; the Ursus snow park and Canalone Miramonti, the World Cup slope which is floodlit for night skiing.

And don’t be fooled into thinking Madonna’s nightlife is quiet – those Italian VIPs linger over long dinners so bars like Cantina del Suisse, Cli hanger and Stube di Franz Josef liven up after midnight and may keep going until the very early hours!
