Ski Holidays in the Heart of the Dolomites
Stretching beneath the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites, Val Gardena is one of Italy's most celebrated ski valleys. Made up of three distinctive villages — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva — this stunning South Tyrolean valley combines world-class skiing, authentic Italian-Tyrolean character and some of the best scenery you will find anywhere on a ski holiday.
Val Gardena is the gateway to the legendary Sella Ronda circuit and part of the Dolomiti Superski area, comprising 12 interconnected ski resorts and a remarkable 1,246km of slopes, making it the largest ski area in the world. From gentle nursery slopes for beginners to long sweeping runs through pine forests and the iconic 40km Sella Ronda loop linking four Dolomite valleys, there is something here for every level of skier. Selva, the highest of the three villages at 1,563m, offers the most direct lift access to the Sella Ronda. Santa Cristina sits between the two and provides a quieter base with easy connections in both directions. Ortisei, the largest village in the valley, has its own extensive ski area on the Alpe di Siusi and a vibrant town centre full of shops, cafes and galleries.
Off the slopes, each village has its own personality. Selva is the liveliest, with buzzing bars and sun-soaked terraces keeping the energy going after the lifts close. Santa Cristina is more relaxed, ideal for those who prefer a peaceful evening after a big day on the mountain. Ortisei has the most going on away from the skiing, with a charming pedestrianised centre and a strong culinary scene. Across all three, traditional South Tyrolean restaurants serve up hearty pasta, local dumplings and fine regional wines.
Whether you are a group looking for great après in Selva, a couple after a mix of skiing and scenery in Santa Cristina, or a family wanting quality ski schools and a relaxed atmosphere in Ortisei — Val Gardena delivers on all fronts. All three villages are connected by a regular ski bus, making it easy to explore the whole valley. Directski.com arranges flights, transfers and accommodation so you can focus on enjoying every moment.
