The Hotel Die Sonne is a 4-star superior family-run hotel in a quiet, sunny spot between Saalbach and Hinterglemm, and its all-inclusive package is one of the most generous you will find in the Alps. Everything from breakfast through to midnight drinks is covered, and we are not talking about the basics here. Think five-course dinners built around regional produce, themed evenings, cocktails, Austrian wines, local spirits and freshly squeezed juices, all included as standard. Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are available throughout, and the quality across the board is a genuine step above what you might expect from an all-inclusive hotel.
The hotel is about 900m from Saalbach village centre, but the free Super Sonne shuttle runs all day, dropping you at any of the four main lift stations, the ski school or wherever else you need to be in the resort. A bus stop sits right at the door and there is a ski slope running alongside the hotel in winter, so you are never far from the action. Once you are on the mountain, you have the full Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn to play with, offering 270km of pistes and 70 lifts across one of Austria's most exciting ski areas.
Rooms come in modern or traditional alpine style, all with balconies, some with mountain views, flat-screen satellite TV, seating area and free Wi-Fi. Family rooms with separate living and sleeping areas are available for those who need the space. For families, the Sonne Mini Club provides childcare from age 2 in winter, up to six days a week and including some evenings, which is a genuine game-changer for parents who want to ski hard or enjoy a quiet dinner together.
The wellness side of things is split into two distinct areas, which is a smart touch. The Sonnenhaus is adults-only for guests aged 15 and over, with a Finnish sauna, high-seat sauna, infrared cabin, brine steam bath, sanarium and a relaxation area with waterbeds. It is calm, quiet and exactly what you want after a big day on the Skicircus. The Sonnenoase is the family zone, with an indoor pool, infrared family island and a heated outdoor whirlpool that is particularly good on a cold evening with the stars out. A Zirben Spa offers Thai massages and treatments for an extra charge, and there is a TechnoGym gym and yoga sessions on the weekly programme. Free parking, ski storage and a lounge with fireplace round things off. The Schwabl family run a tight ship here, and it shows in the detail and the warmth of the welcome.
