Ski Niederau / Oberau, Austria
<previous photo next photo>

Set within the romantically named Wildschönau (derived from 'wild' and 'beautiful') area and close to the Kitzbühel ski area lies the picturesque resorts of Niederau and Oberau. In this truly unspoiled snowy corner of the Tyrol, you are afforded an opportunity to experience life and skiing at a very relaxed pace. Due to the variety of skiing levels catered for, the villages are particularly attractive to families although there is still quite a lively après-ski scene. The rural charm is enhanced by the availability of fresh milk and cheese from the nearby Käsealm dairy and the idyllic neighbouring churches and farmhouses. Niederau is most definitely a place to let cares and pretensions drift away, at least for a week.

The Snow

The resorts are most suited to beginner and intermediate skiers. the Wildschönau valley is a great place to learn how to ski or board with its broad nursery slopes and highly rated tutition. An eight-person gondola leaves from the centre of Niederau and brings you to the Markbachjoch novice's plateau (1,500m) which has challenging runs back down to Niederau. 48km of surrounding piste are more than adequately serviced by 28 lifts and queues are almost unheard of. A free ski bus links Oberau and Auffach, the latter having its own half pipe which complements the boarder cross course in Niederau. There are a limited number of black runs from the upper slopes of Schatzberg suitable for advanced skiers. Please note the ski facts represent the Wildschönau valley.

Après ski

Niederau isn't short of off piste activities with two nightclubs, evening entertainment in the Cave Bar under Hotel Staffler and restaurants offering Austrian and Italian cuisine. Oberau being smaller, has a less hectic atmosphere which is very warm and informal. There are also a number of sporting activities such as skating, bowling, fondues paragliding, tobogganing and the magical moonlight sleigh rides which are not be missed.
