<previous photo next photo>

Set in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont, the picturesque resort of Killington is like something right off a Christmas chocolate box. This resort, which is the largest in the Eastern United States, comprises six mountains that are interconnected by 87 miles of trails. Unlike the centralised European resorts, most of Killington's hotels and restaurants are spread across a five-mile approach road. That said however, American don't like to walk too far and there is a free daytime shuttle bus service around the base areas and lodgings. This resort is very popular with New Yorkers who are happy to exchange the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple for the tranquillity of this winter wonderland. Killington is a great spot for both families and young people with plenty to amuse all when away from the slopes.

The Snow

In the unlikely event of the skies not delivering, Killington has the most extensive snowmaking facilities in the world (a mere 1,850 snow canons!) to fall back on. This resort has runs to satisfy the appetites of all types of skiers which a healthy mix of green, blue and black runs. Beginners will appreciate the nursery slopes and gentle blue runs leading down from most lifts while intermediates can get their teeth into the generous scattering of long reds and easy blacks. Experts looking for a challenge are advised to head to Killington peak, where there is a handful of genuine double-diamond fall-line runs under the two chair-lifts, and Bear Mountain. Boarders are well catered for also and there are numerous terrain parks in the area for honing their skills.

Après ski

The yanks enjoy a good party and Killington is reputed to have the best nightlife of the Eastern resorts. Although there are bars at the base lodges, keen après skiers head down Killington Road to one of the lively bars, clubs and restaurants. Families may prefer to choose from other après ski activities including ice skating, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and a trip to Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory.
