Ski Saalbach, Austria
<previous photo next photo>

Home of the now famous "Ski Circus", Saalbach/Hinterglemm is the merged product of a number of resort towns in this Salzburg region including Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Vorderglemm and Leogang. The result is over 200km of marked piste and very attractive skiing. With over 50 drag lifts, chairs, gondolas etc. at your disposal, capable of transporting 64,000 skiers up a myriad of hills, you will be no doubt wondering if the skiers might be getting in the way of all those lifts.

The Snow

Saalbach & Hinterglemm are ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers with Austria's premier schools of tuition available on tap and at reasonable rates. The nursery slopes in Saalbach are located right beside the main street of the town and therefore mummies and daddies can train their prodigious offspring without having to leave the welcoming confines of the shopping or drinking streets nearby. The fact that Saalbach & Hinterglemm played host to the 1991 World Ski Championships will be a source of some relief to the advanced skiers out there, who feared that their taste for the extreme was not being catered for. New for this season, the double chairlift that was the Westgipfel 3 is now an 8 seater cabin lift and the Weissbach and Kar lift has been replaced with the 6 seater Schonleiten Gipfelbahn with bubbles and heated seats. You can see the best ski and snowboard talent on display from the local schools every Wednesday and if you didn´t get enough of the pistes during the day, on Tuesdays and Thursdays you can enjoy night-time skiing on the floodlit slope.

Après ski

Apart from imbibing or eating, holidaymakers can enjoy a bout of tennis, bowling, sleigh rides or floodlit skiing or take a dip in the Hinterglemm swimming pool or saunas. Or you could take a day trip to visit the nearby thermal baths. Alternatively you could take the two-hour trip to Salzburg, where that unknown Austrian musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. Hinterglemm is more sedate in the nightlife department than its lively cousin Saalbach.
