Kevin Alderton
Kevin's story
Kevin Alderton lost his sight in a tragic attack outside a nightclub in Islington,
London, in 1998. With 4-6% vision remaining, he was discharged from the army in 2000.
As a result of losing his sight, his career and his independence, Kevin went through
a period of deep depression, during which time he undertook an intensive rehabilitation
course at St. Dunstan's, the Brighton based charity for blind ex-servicemen and women.
Kevin had been a keen skier in his youth and an army ski instructor. He re-established
his love of skiing during a ski trip in January 2003, initially finding he spent more time
in the snow than on it. Sheer determination and hard work got Kevin back onto his skiis
and he was selected for the British Adaptive Ski Team in May 2005 and represented Great
Britain in four Alpine events.
On 14th April 2006, Kevin created the first world record for Blind Speed Skiing, achieving
a staggering 100.94mph on the sheer 'Flying Kilometre' black run in Les Arcs in the French
Alps.
On 15th November 2006, Kevin created the first world indoor blind speed skiing record,
achieving a speed of 56.6mph in the world's largest indoor ski village at Landgraaf,
Holland.
This year Kevin is looking at breaking both World Records in November 2007 and April 2008.
